Help Dean Get Back Home Safely

Kia ora,

If you're here, it's likely because you watched a short video where we crossed paths with a man named Dean. What you saw was only a brief moment, but behind it is a much more complex situation that Dean is currently facing.

Dean's Situation

Dean is currently living out of his bus and is trying to get back home after completing treatment. His goal is simple, to return home safely. Right now, that's not easy. His bus has mechanical issues that need urgent repair, including parts that have been specially sourced from Australia. These parts cost around $260, and he also has additional costs close to $300 for medication that is not funded, which he shared is almost half of his weekly benefit. He has been given a deadline on Thursday next week to pay for the parts, otherwise they may be sent back after taking weeks to arrive.

I was able to go to the ATM and help cover part of these costs in the moment, but there are still remaining expenses that haven't been met. Even with the bus currently running, it is not safe to drive properly without these repairs. Dean explained that without the correct parts, the vehicle can overheat and leak diesel, making it dangerous to operate.

Health Challenges

Dean also shared that earlier this year, he was assaulted during an attempted robbery, which has had serious ongoing effects. Since then, he has experienced:

  • Amnesia
  • Loss of mobility and is currently unable to walk independently
  • Loss of eyesight that has been affected

He is currently in treatment and has recently spent weeks in hospital, working toward regaining strength. Despite being told he may not walk again, Dean is still determined to try. He now relies heavily on a wheelchair, and even basic daily movement is physically demanding.

Why This Fundraiser Matters

This fundraiser is here to support Dean in practical and immediate ways:

  • Cover remaining bus repair costs before the deadline
  • Support his unfunded medication expenses
  • Help fund a tow back home if driving is not safe
  • Assist with ongoing medical-related needs
  • Create the possibility of better, more accessible transport in the future if achievable

This is not about making promises. It is about meeting real needs step by step, based on what Dean is currently facing.

The Bigger Picture

Dean is doing everything he can to keep moving forward. With support, we can:

  • Help him safely return home
  • Reduce the physical strain he faces daily
  • Ease the financial pressure of urgent repairs and medication
  • Support him as he continues recovery from a traumatic incident

Even small contributions can make a real difference.

A Message From the Heart

In the moment, I was able to help Dean with what I had, but it was clear his situation goes beyond what one person can do alone. If you're able to support, thank you. It truly matters. If you can't donate, sharing this page can help reach someone who can.

Thank you for taking the time to read Dean's story.
Thank you for caring.
Thank you for being part of this moment.

With gratitude,
